    Young Ghanaian Pharmacists Lead Team to Win International Entrepreneurship Challenge

    The ultimate prize of an international entrepreneurship competition for start-up companies hosted in South Africa on 26th May, MTN-Jumia Entrepreneurship Challenge, has been won by a team of young Ghanaian pharmacists.

    The team, made up of two young pharmacists-- Pharm. Hayford Nkansah Brako and Pharm. Victoria Tekyiwaah Amofah Acheampong—and a software engineer competed with two other teams from Nigeria and Tanzania who had also emerged as winners in their respective countries to win the final prize of US$25,000.

    The start-up product developed by Mr. Brako and his colleagues, MedRx app, is an interactive health platform for all users who have health needs. The app connects users to health personnel from various fields of practice including hospitals, pharmacy, laboratory and academia.

    A local newspaper, Business and Financial Times, outlined the odyssey of the entrepreneurship competition in a May issue of its publication. The first round of the multi-phase competition, which was the application stage, opened from 16th February to 27th March and received a massive response across Africa. Other African countries that took part in this challenge were: Nigeria, Cameroon, Rwanda, South Africa, Kenya, Morocco, Ivory Coast, Tanzania, Egypt, Senegal, Benin, Uganda, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Zambia, Togo and Bostwana.

    The MedRx team was selected as the ultimate winner after all the finalists pitched their business to a room of successful entrepreneurs, business leaders, judges, investors and international media.

    Apart from the ultimate cash prize of $25,000.00 the team is expected to benefit from a host of other packages that will be provided by MTN, a telecommunication giant in Africa. The package includes access to a Facebook Start Programme to the value of US$15,000, which includes tools and services needed to build mobile applications.

    The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH), as part of its mission to raise awareness of the value of the pharmacist is in the process of reviewing a proposal it had received from Pharm. Brako and the MedRx team to spearhead a campaign dubbed, "Ask for the Pharmacist.”
